FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Now that the trip is over, we won't be checking e-mail as often, so if you have a question, check here first. This page lists some of the more common questions we received during our trip.
Q: How long did it take to plan the trip?
A: We started planning in October 2000, and took about 6 weeks to plan a schedule that began in Puerto Rico and lasted 200 days. After some minor problems eliminated that possibility, we took 3 more weeks to plan the trip that we took. Of course, this plan changed while we were traveling as well.
Q: How much did this cost?
A: For two people for 7 months, the total cost was about $28,000, including the car. This is less than the amount that Alex Rodriguez gets per plate appearance.
Q: Why did you cross the country twice?
A: We started and ended in Seattle because our friends Kerry and Eric live there and were happy to host us. As well, the car was rented in Vancouver so we had to return it there. So Seattle was the best spot to begin and end the trip. But because the All-Star game was also in Seattle, we decided to drive back for that. This actually was a good thing to do as we got to see much more of the country than we would have if we just drove a circular route.
Q: Why didn't you go to ... ?
A: Many people wondered why we missed certain ballparks or cities - simply because the schedule didn't allow it. We did skip two parks that we had been scheduled to visit - we missed Akron because it was the same day as Game 7 of the NHL finals, and we missed Brooklyn because it was sold out and we didn't get any response from the team regarding tickets. We hope to do smaller trips in the future, so if you have any ideas to help us plan, let us know!
Q: What was your favourite...?
A: Check the Best and Worst page for all our awards.
Q: Did you meet other roadtrippers?
A: Yes. We met up with Dr. Nick who was also on a season-long baseball trip, as well as trying to lose over 250 pounds. We also met with a number of people who were taking 1 or 2 week trips. Traveling for baseball is something that so many people do, and we enjoyed meeting many of them in parks around the country.
We also met up with Andrew and Peter of The Sports Road Trip - check out their page for a truly inspiring road trip.
Q: What sort of media exposure did you get?
A: We kept our trip very low-key, because we didn't want to be distracted. We had one newspaper article in Dallas, one radio interview in Pittsburgh, and one radio interview in Tokyo.
Q: Did you have any car trouble?
A: Other than locking the keys in the car and not having enough gas to start the car on a steep hill, we had no problems. We did get rear-ended in NYC, but there was no damage.
Q: Didn't you get tired of baseball?
A: No. But we did get tired of restaurant food and hotels.
Q: Do you have plans to do the same trip again?
A: Yes, but only over 3 months or so. Perhaps every five years. In between I will be taking trips to see the new stadiums as they are built.
