BALLPARK GAME RECAP

LACKAWANNA COUNTY STADIUM

Lackawanna County Stadium is located in Montage Mountain, which is a small resort area in Scranton. There are ski hills nearby, and the scenery surrounding the stadium is very pleasant, and probably more so once spring takes hold. Located just off exit 182A on I-81, there is plenty of parking for $2. I didn't see any free parking close by, as the stadium is set off by itself, away from other attractions in the area.

Outside, lots of parking

The stadium itself is fairly large, with a capacity of about 11,000, and 3 seating levels. The lower level seats are only $7.50 and are generally worth the price, but you can buy bleacher seats for $5 and sit anywhere you want, as there is no real ticket checking. The upper level seats are actually quite far away from the action for a minor league field, due to the presence of a small club level. There are both ramps and stairs to the upper deck, and the big advantage of sitting there is that there are plenty of opportunities for foul balls. There is a picnic area down the right field line, but it wasn't in use on the day I was there. As well, there is a stadium club restaurant at the end of the concourse by first base.

The concourse is wide enough, and the nice element here is a banner hanging for each International League team. The only problem was that the banners had yet to be updated for the 2003 season and the Ottawa Lynx banner still indicated that they were the affiliate of the Montreal Expos. The food choices are typical, and there is nothing special about them. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the artificial turf field, which is rare in the minor leagues. The scoreboard is very good, as it gives the batter's previous at-bats, which assists those who are scoring the game.

The forest backdrop is nicer in the summer

Overall, this stadium is a good place to watch the game because you can sit close the the action and the small forest backdrop behind the stadium is quite nice. According to one usher, they even had a bear behind the stadium once, which added to the excitement of the game. They have plenty of contests that you can enter (I won a satellite dish that I couldn't use!) and friendly staff. The only real negative was the lack of creative food options, but that shouldn't stop you from paying this place a visit.
