DESCRIPTION BALLPARK GAME RECAP

ZEPHYR FIELD

Zephyr Field is located about 5 miles west of downtown New Orleans, right in the middle of a semi-industrial area. From outside, the stadium is fairly nice, a light brown facade that serves as the main gate. Inside, there are two seating levels, separated by sets of stairs. There are four seating options - the lower level box seats between the bases are $9, with the lower level seats down the lines going for $8. All upper level seats are $7, while outfield grass seating is $5. We recommend the $9 or $7 seats - there is no point paying $8 at this park, the seats are too far away.

The upper level is mostly covered by a roof, while the lower level is mostly open - the last four rows are covered by the upper overhang. Note that the upper level doesn't extend beyond the bases.  On the small facade between the two decks are a couple of line scoreboards.

From right field seats - it is very dark

This is a large park - 332 feet down the lines, 405 to straightaway center with an even deeper 409 feet sign just left of center. The large scoreboard is in left center field. The concourse is very wide, and this allows you ample space to view the good variety of food choices. There was Italian food, Cajun food, and a number of other choices. Prices were too expensive for the minors however. As well, because the game was delayed 2.5 hours, most of the concessions were closed by the time I went to eat, which means I could only try a hot dog, which was still pretty good.

The lineups are displayed much like a movie marquee, which is a unique aspect of this stadium. PCL standings are also displayed, although only two divisions are present. Attendance figures are also updated daily.

Making the Calgary lineup

A couple of features are the picnic area down the right field line, as well as the small swimming pool above the right field fence - both of these sections are for parties. Beyond left field was Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, but to get here you have to leave the stadium. It appears to be another party area. There is also a bar along the concourse behind first base - it was empty on the day we went, because there were so few fans left after the long delay.

One final note - there was a prominently displayed Canadian flag - I assume that this is because the visitors were the Calgary Cannons, but it was a nice touch anyway.

Overall, this park is very simple, with no fancy features to distract you from the game. Although it was built in 1994, it didn't fall into the trap of trying to be all things to all people - it is a fan's park with good food options and friendly staff. It is not the highlight of New Orleans, but it is a park worth seeing if you are in the area.
