LAS VEGAS - GAME RECAP

The game we saw was between the Calgary Cannons (7-9), farm team of the Florida Marlins, and the hometown Las Vegas 51's (9-9) who were in their first year as the Dodgers' AAA affiliate. Las Vegas had taken the first three games of the four-game set and were looking to sweep. Starting pitchers were Chad Smith for Calgary, who was on a rehab assignment and Jeff Williams for Las Vegas.

After two scoreless innings, Calgary's Rich Becker reached on an error and scored on Chad Mottola's second of four singles. Las Vegas tied it in the fourth when Brian Johnson singled in Jeff Barry, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

The fifth would turn out to be the critical inning. Cam Smith relieved Williams and immediately walked Mike Gulan (leading the league with a .433 average). After a strikeout to Mottola, Ryan Thompson singled, and then ex-Marlin Ramon Castro slammed a 3-run shot to left to make it 4-1 Cannons.

Las Vegas got one back in the sixth, but 3 Calgary relievers shut the door the rest of the way. Calgary added two in the ninth, one coming on Becker's lead-off homer, and the final was 6-2 Cannons.
