APPLETON, WISCONSIN
Appleton is the largest of five communities that make up what is known as Fox Cities. Located about 90 miles north of Milwaukee, Fox Cities has hosted minor-league baseball for over 100 years. The team has been known as the Fox Cities Foxes and the Appleton Foxes in the past, but changed their name to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 1995.
Appleton is known as the birthplace of Harry Houdini and has a walking tour that takes you around the areas in which he grew up. Other areas of interest in the Fox Cities include a chocolate factory, plenty of cheese stores, and the International Softball Congress, located in Kimberly.
The largest attraction is the Fox River Mall, located near the stadium and containing over 180 stores. Finally, Appleton is also host to the NCAA Division III World Series, taking place from May 26-29, 2001 at Fox Cities Stadium.
Overall, we didn't see much of Appleton or the Fox Cities due to poor weather and limited time, but it has enough attractions to keep you busy for a day or two.
