SAN FRANCISCO - GAME RECAPS
July 19th - San Francisco 2, Colorado 1 - Attendance 41,341
The Rockies continue to follow us around as they traveled to Pac Bell Park to play the Giants. A battle of Shawns today as Rockie rookie Chacon took on Giant Estes. Both pitchers had control problems, but neither team could capitalize and after 5 innings, the game was still scoreless.
In the top of the 6th, Todd Helton reached on a strikeout and passed ball, and after advancing on a ground out, he scored on Ben Petrick's single. The game remained 1-0 in Colorado's favor, and in the bottom of the ninth, Juan Acevedo was brought in to save it. He quickly retired J.T. Snow and pinch-hitter Rich Aurilia, but then walked Felipe Crespo and gave up a single to Marvin Benard. Ramon Martinez then singled in the tying run, bringing Barry Bonds to the plate. Of course, he was intentionally walked to load the bases, but the strategy failed the Rockies as Acevedo walked Jeff Kent on 4 pitches, forcing in the winning run and sending the fans home happy.
Santiago
is out at first
This was a great game with a 9th-inning comeback, but the large number of walks was disappointing. But we had great seats, so it gets an 8/10.
July 20th - San Francisco 1, Arizona 0
Well, this one doesn't really count - we watched 4 innings from the free part at the right field fence. But we did see the 3rd inning home run by Martinez so we include it here for completeness.
Out
of the way!
July 21st - Arizona 9, San Francisco 2 - Attendance 41,669
This game was fantastic for 6 innings as Curt Schilling had a no-hitter for the D'Backs while Ryan Jensen had only allowed a solo homer to Jay Bell. But in the 7th, David DeLucci hit a pinch-hit grand slam to make it 5-0 and in the bottom half, Armando Rios singled to right with one out, ending the no-hitter. The 8th inning was terrible as Arizona added 4 more runs on a Luis Gonzalez 3 -run shot as well as a Matt Williams homer. The Giants managed two meaningless runs in the 8th, but the game ended shortly thereafter, with Arizona prevailing 9-2.
6 perfect innings ruined by two rotten ones - let's average it out and give it a 7/10.
