WASHINGTON - ATTRACTIONS
Unfortunately, my time
in Washington was for business, so I only had one day to see the city. As the
national capital, Washington has the most interesting attractions in the nation,
although most have a political or historical bent to them. It is impossible for
me to recommend just one or two attractions as there are literally dozens of
interesting things to see. Even the most avid tourist would have trouble seeing
everything over a 1-week period, there is just so much to see.
Having said that, I
must encourage all readers to spend some time in the Smithsonian, which houses
several superb museums, all of which seem to be free of charge. The Museum of
American History, Museum of Natural History, Air and Space Museum and National
Art Gallery are the big 4 and each could easily take a day for someone who
wants to see the whole thing. The various memorials around the downtown core
make for a long and interesting walk. The Mall, which stretches from the
Lincoln Memorial to the Capital is particularly beautiful in late April and
early May, although construction right now around the Washington Monument ruins
the overall effect.
Other things to see
include the FBI Building, the Spy Museum, the White House, Arlington National
Cemetery, and the Pentagon.
Now that MLB has finally returned to Washington, these fascinating sites can be included as part of any baseball roadtrip.
