PHILADELPHIA - GAME RECAPS
June 5th - New York Mets 9 Philadelphia 0 - Attendance 22,060.
The Mets sent Rick Reed to the mound to face Robert Person. Reed is one of the best control pitchers in the game, but he was a bit off tonight, walking 3 batters! The game was scoreless after 3, with both pitchers having walked 1 and given up 1 hit, but in the 4th, the Mets scored twice on a Mike Piazza double and singles by Robin Ventura and Todd Zeile. In the 5th, the Mets continued the attack, scoring 5 more runs on 3 doubles and 3 singles. Tsuyoshi Shinjo had a two-run double in the barrage.
Reed was on his game right from the start, never allowing a runner past second base. He gave up only 4 hits and threw a shutout, our first major league shutout on this trip. The Mets added two more runs in the 9th, including a Ventura homer and another Shinjo double to make the final 9-0. Reed's great performance and Shinjo's hitting made this memorable for us, so this game gets a 5/10.
June 6th - Philadelphia 6 New York Mets 1 - Attendance 32,703.
Anthony Telemaco got the start for the Phillies against Glendon Rusch for the Mets. This game was almost a mirror image of yesterday's tilt, with the first 3 innings going by quickly without a run for either side. In the 4th, the Phillies scored three on a double, two singles, and an error. In the fifth, they put the game away with two more on Pat Burrell's 2-run double. Telemaco was pitching very well, and he got to the ninth with a 6-0 lead. Unfortunately, he could not get the shutout, yielding a walk and a single to the first two batters. Ventura hit a perfect double play ball, but the throw from Kevin Jordan was wild, and Darryl Hamilton scored the only Mets' run of the game. Final was 6-1 Philly and Telemaco had his first complete game of the year. Another 5/10 game, as the Phillies won big.
