MONTREAL - GAME RECAPS

September 7th - Montreal Expos 4, Philadelphia Phillies 2 - Attendance 4,451

Javier Vazquez, August's pitcher of the month in the NL, was the starter for the Expos, and he ran into early trouble as Jimmy Rollins singled to start the game. After Rollins advanced to second on a groundout, Scott Rolen singled him home for a 1-0 Phillies' lead.

Montreal responded off Brandon Duckworth in the 2nd inning. Orlando Cabrera singled to lead off, and Lee Stevens doubled him home. The throw to second to get Stevens went all the way to the dugout because the Phillies forgot to cover the bag, and Stevens was on third. Michael Barrett then hit a sacrifice fly to bring him home and the Expos were up 2-1. Barrett added a solo homer in the third to increase the lead to 3-1 Montreal.

For Vazquez, that was more than enough. He allowed only one baserunner (on an error) between the 3rd and 7th innings as the Phillies couldn't get to him. The Expos scored their 4th run in the 7th on two hits and two walks and Vazquez entered the 8th with a 4-1 lead. With one out, Rollins homered, but Vazquez was left in and retired the final two batters. Vazquez was taken out after scattering 4 hits over eight innings, and the Expos' bullpen was able to retire Philadelphia in the 9th as the Expos win 4-2. This game gets an 8/10 as it was great to see Vazquez spin another gem.

The last pitch of the game

September 8th - Philadelphia Phillies 6, Montreal Expos 0,  - Attendance 5,650

Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a foul-pole homer off Tomo Ohka and that was enough for Randy Wolf, who pitched his first career shutout, giving up 6 hits and only allowing one runner to reach 3rd base throughout the game. The Phillies were up 2-0 when Ohka was replaced and the Montreal bullpen was horrid, giving up 4 runs in the 6th inning on 7 singles - the final was 6-0 in one of the more forgettable games on this trip. It gets a 2/10 only because Wolf pitched so well.
