HOUSTON - ATTRACTIONS

Houston is a large city, but it didn't have that much that interested us. Of course, Houston has all of the normal attractions such as a zoo, history museum, and science center, but it is best known as home of the Johnson Space Center, an attraction that takes almost a full day to see completely, so that is where we spent most of our time. Thus, this page is a bit sparse, but as the Space Center is one of the most interesting places we have seen on our trip, we expect you will understand.

1. Space Center Houston - Located 25 miles southeast of Houston, this attraction is the tourist front to the Johnson Space Center. Take exit 25 from I-45 and go east on NASA Road - the entrance is about 2 miles up on the left. Parking is $3 and the entrance fee is $14.95, but as you can spend the whole day here, it is worth it. Consider the membership option if you plan to visit other science centers around the country - it isn't that much more to join.

The most important thing to do is take the tram tour - two tours are offered, and the itineraries seem to change depending on what missions are going on. These tours take you to mission control, astronaut training facilities, and other parts of the Kennedy Space center. Because space is limited and reservations are not accepted, get one or both of these tours done as soon as possible.

Once you are back inside the main building, there are lots of exhibits for everyone - movies explain how to be an astronaut, or the problems of living in space. A space shuttle cockpit mockup is interesting, as is the mission status center. Of course, there is also a small diner to have a snack at. This is a great place to visit and we strongly recommend spending at least 5-6 hours to see everything - it is truly fascinating.

2. Houston Arboretum and Nature Center - Located at the western edge of Memorial Park, this small nature preserve provides a number of hiking trails. There is an interpretative center (closed on Monday) and a trail map is available for the hefty price of 25 cents. If you want to escape from the city for a short time, try coming here, and bring your binoculars - you may see some interesting wildlife.
