LOS ANGELES - ATTRACTIONS

L.A. is known for the following: Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Anaheim, and Universal Studios. None of these places are in the city of L.A. Since we tried to see the city rather than the surrounding area, here are 3 things to see that are actually part of the City of Los Angeles.

1. Griffith Park and Observatory - Located north of the city, Griffith Park is the largest urban park in the country. Driving here can be fun as the signage is poor, but if you are lucky you will happen upon the carousel which provides for a 5 minute ride for only $1. The observatory is on the slopes of Mount Hollywood, and has great views of the city, although the smog can be a drag. There is a free planetarium inside which is somewhat interesting. If you are there in the evening, you can view the night skies through the large telescope.

2. El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument - This collection of historic buildings is located close to where Los Angeles was originally founded in 1781. The center is known as the Old Plaza and just south is the Old Plaza firehouse which provides a very brief but interesting exhibit on firefighting in the late 1800's. The highlight of the monument is Olvera Street, north of the main plaza which contains a number of small stalls selling Mexican handicrafts and snacks and is a nice place to walk around for an hour or so.

3. Exposition Park - Only of interest to those who may want to see the 1984 Olympic Stadium or one of the several museums located at this park just south of USC. Parking is $5, so look for something along the street if you can.
