UPDATED MAJOR LEAGUE STADIUM RANKINGS
In 2001, I ranked all 30 stadiums based on a number of factors such as ticket prices, access, seating option and fan friendliness. The results were interesting, with PNC Park taking top spot and Pennsylvania's other park, Veterans Stadium, at #30. That page can be found here.
Five years later, there are 5 new stadiums and modifications to all the other stadiums as well. It is therefore time to update the rankings. Rather than use a numerical scoring system, I am just going by feel - which park would I like to see a game in if I could only see 1 game.
The number in brackets is the stadium's ranking in 2001. Otherwise, this is purely subjective and largely based on stadium information that is 5 years old.
1. PNC Park (1) - Haven't been back since 2001, but still loved this place for so many reasons.
2. AT&T Park (3) - Another park that needs to be revisited. The views are spectacular.
3. Wrigley Field (6) - A day game visit in 2006 was as close to heaven as I have been. Avoid driving if you can.
4. Camden Yards (2) - The Scalp-Free zone is still there.
5. Citizens Bank Park (Opened 2004) - The best of the new parks.
6. Miller Park (5) - Friendly staff and the ability to sit anywhere. Lower level seats very close to the action.
7. Petco Park (Opened 2004) - Great location and a pitcher's park. The Western Metal Supply Co. building is a great idea.
8. Coors Field (8) - Unbeatable view.
9. Safeco Field (4) - The large, retractable roof stadiums are no longer that impressive.
10. Kauffman Stadium (10) - Cheap seats and a beautiful old-time setting. So what if the team is no good.
11. Comerica Park (11) - Detroit's changing downtown has really helped.
12. Great American Ballpark (Opened 2003) - I enjoyed the riverside walk but have to revisit for the surrounding area which has been built since I was last there.
13. Jacobs Field (7) - I remember friendly staff and cold weather. Perhaps a revisit in 2007?
14. Busch Stadium (19 for Old Busch, New Busch opened 2006) - Nothing special here and a bit pricey, but the fans are still the best.
15. Angel Stadium (18) - The World Series win in 2003 has changed the fans moving this park up a bit.
16. Fenway Park (12) - Fans were annoying in the games I saw.
17. Turner Field (14) - A good park with $1 seats, but lacking in any real atmosphere.
18. Chase Field (9) - The 7th game of the 2001 World Series will never be forgotten, but otherwise this is just too big.
19. Ballpark in Arlington (17) - Location not good, but still a great stadium.
20. Minute Maid Park (15) - Another large hangar with too many distractions, but still worth watching a game.
21. US Cellular Field (16) - $18 parking and difficult to move between levels.
22. Yankee Stadium (21) - Difficult to move around.
23. RFK Stadium (Re-opened 2005) - Nothing impressive here, but I enjoyed the simple atmosphere of a "new" cookie-cutter park. Look forward to the new park.
24. Dodger Stadium (20) - Nearly impossible to move around here, and parking is a hassle as the lots are numbered in some strange order.
25. McAfee Coliseum (24) - One of the few multi-purpose stadiums left.
26. Rogers Centre (23) - Nearly obsolete.
27. Tropicana Field (25) - A pleasant dome.
28. Metrodome (26) - An unpleasant dome.
29. Shea Stadium (28) - Unpleasant staff really hurt the ranking.
30.
Dolphin
Stadium (27) - The
name says it all.
